Ruth Roman (n e Gold) was born at Lynn in Massachusetts. The parents of her were Lithuanian Jews Mary Pauline and Abraham Roman. At the age of five her carnival barker father passed away which left Ruth's mother without a choice other than to be a cleaning lady and waitress in order to provide for the family. Ruth was a student at the school located in Boston's poorest tenement area. But she quit school after just two years of school to take on a acting career. This was not an easy path to take. While she was offered an opportunity as a hat check girl in New York posing as a still for a mystery magazine but no theater jobs was offered. The following job she got was the "hat check" woman at a nightclub but she quit and relocated to Boston. She made ends meet with her ushering duties in the morning, while at night performing with the New England Repertory Company, her first steady acting job. She took classes in drama at The Bishop-Lee Theatre School and graduated.
